Carbon Credit Basics: Types of Forest Offset Projects

We've seen a lot of news lately on carbon credits. Some good. Some not so good. There is a lot of information (and misinformation) out there about what carbon offsets are and how they actually work. So we're starting with the basics. The 3 types of carbon credit projects:   1. AFFORESTATION / REFORESTATION Typically focused on non-forested lands, these projects focus on restoring tree cover. Simple and straightforward, though sometimes a little costly.   2. AVOIDED CONVERSION (AC)  This is probably what you think about when you think about carbon credits - projects that focus on preventing forest from being converted into something else (housing, parking lots, strip malls, etc.). These are incredibly important projects, but the key is making sure that the forest being protected was actually under threat of conversion in the first place. It’s not really a climate solution if you’re claiming credit for carbon stored in a forest that was always going to be stored. The goal is to further incentivize people to keep forests as forests.     3. IMPROVED FOREST MANAGEMENT (IFM)  This is probably the most complex of all the carbon offset project types but it is also probably one of the most important (it’s also our favorite!). IFM projects focus on managing forests to maintain - and ideally increase - the amount of carbon stored in a forest (called ‘carbon stocking’). This means forests can be managed for carbon credits as well as other outcomes (conservation, products, wildlife habitat, etc.)    Carbon offset markets are incredibly complex and nuanced and there are a ton of different types of projects within these categories. The key to all any carbon project though is demonstrating that carbon sequestration would not have happened without this work.  You can't get credit for work that was never done.   It is also important to remember that carbon credits are just one solution. If you're just paying someone else to offset your emissions without actively trying to improve your own products, operations, or processes - you’re doing it wrong.     There is no silver bullet to climate change. We must all play a part. #forestproud
